Announcing:
The Clinic's Annual Awards Luncheon
Friday April 25, 2008

In honor of the stellar contributions made in the field of children's mental health by two longtime Clinic supporters, we established two prestigious service awards. This year's luncheon will be held April 25th as part of the final day of a two day professional development training. This year's training topic is Engaging Vulnerable Families Through a Culturally Sensitive Perspective: Tools for Home Visiting presented by Dr. Victor Bernstein, a professor and nationally prominent early childhood mental health advocate, from the University of Chicago's Department of Child Psychiatry. This training is one of a series offered by the Clinic's Early Intervention Training Institute.

Adding to the original two awards, this year the Clinic will present three honors. The first is the Evis Coda Award for Building Hope for Families and will be presented to Connie Lillas, Ph.D., MFT, RN for her outstanding work in the field. The second is the Quinton James Award for Making a Difference, honoring an entity, organization or elected/public official who has had a broad impact on improving the lives of children and families. This year, Marvin J. Southard, D.S.W., is honored for his work with the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health. Finally, Supervisor Yvonne B. Burke will receive Special Recognitionfor Public Service and Commitment to Children and Families.

Dr. Evis Coda, an award-winning child psychiatrist whose professional career included Medical Director at St. John's Kennedy Child Study Center in Santa Monica, Medical Director at Los Angeles Child Guidance Clinic and teaching appointments at UCLA School of Medicine and USC School of Medicine. He has published articles on mental health and has served on various national committees and boards in support of children's health services, including the Clinic.

He has served on the Board of Directors of the Clinic for over 16 years and is a past Chairperson.

Because We Care: An Early Intervention
Mental Health Services Conference

January 2005, the Clinic welcomed over 650 mental health professionals, child care and Head Start workers, child advocates, nurses, educators, parents, policy makers and pubic officials to Because We Care: An Early Intervention Mental Health Services Conference.  The purpose of the event was to reduce the impact of childhood trauma on children ages 0-5 by increasing participants’ understanding, knowledge and skills as they relate to evidence-based best practices in early intervention approaches, models and treatment strategies.

In partnership with the conference’s local, state and national co-sponsors, we were honored to have Dr. David Satcher, the 16th Surgeon General of the United States, the current Director of the National Center for Primary Care at the Morehouse School of Medicine and the interim Dean of  the Morehouse School of Medicine, deliver the keynote address, Mental Health in Children – A Health Crisis.

Additional plenary presentations were made by Dr. Joy Osofsky, Professor of Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Public Health at Louisiana State University and President of ZERO TO THREE on The Impact of Trauma on 0-5 Year Olds; and Dr. Susan McDonough, Associate Professor and Research Scientist in the School of Social Work at the University of Michigan on Overburdened Families.
